# The Dansker — Short Fiction character guide

> The Dansker in Short Fiction by Herman Melville.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Dansker, the sage Dansker

**First appearance:** 0029-billy-budd-foretopman

## Snapshot

An old, tobacco-chewing sailor aboard the Indomitable whose Delphic warnings about Jemmy Legs fall on Billy Budd's dangerously innocent ears.

## Who they are

The Dansker has spent enough years before the mast to have traded hope for grim prudence, and he sits apart from the crew with his black teeth and cryptic oracles. When Billy half-confides his troubles, the old man divines the truth at once and names the master-at-arms as the source, only to be met with Billy's blank disbelief. His refusal to interfere, born of long experience, makes him the story's quiet Cassandra: he sees the trap closing and can do nothing but watch the child-man walk into it.
