# Captain the Honourable Edward Fairfax Vere — Short Fiction character guide

> Captain the Honourable Edward Fairfax Vere in Short Fiction by Herman Melville.

**Role:** major

**Also known as:** Captain Vere, Edward Fairfax Vere, Vere, Fairfax

**First appearance:** 0029-billy-budd-foretopman

## Snapshot

The bookish, resolute captain of the Indomitable, nicknamed 'Starry Vere,' whose intellectual convictions and rigid sense of duty isolate him from his own officers.

## Who they are

Vere is an aristocrat and a reader, carrying a compact library to sea and preferring Montaigne to mess-room banter, which earns him a reputation for pedantry among his peers. His settled convictions act as a dyke against the revolutionary opinions of his era, and he trusts principle over popularity. When crisis arrives aboard his ship, that same inflexibility will force him to weigh law, conscience, and command in ways his officers never anticipate.
