# Captain Amasa Delano — Short Fiction character guide

> Captain Amasa Delano in Short Fiction by Herman Melville.

**Role:** major

**Also known as:** Delano, Captain Delano, Amasa Delano, Don Amasa

**First appearance:** 0023-benito-cereno

## Snapshot

A genial American sealer captain who boards a drifting Spanish ship out of pure good nature, only to find his trust tested by everything he sees aboard.

## Who they are

Delano commands the Bachelor's Delight and approaches the San Dominick with baskets of fish, assuming distress rather than danger. His defining trait is an almost willful benevolence: he reads strangeness as misfortune, not menace, and his confidence in his own judgment makes him slow to credit what his eyes suggest. That gap between perception and suspicion is the engine of the story's middle arc, as Delano's good-natured blindness keeps the reader guessing alongside him.
