# Benito Cereno — Short Fiction character guide

> Benito Cereno in Short Fiction by Herman Melville.

**Role:** major

**Also known as:** Don Benito, Don Benito Cereno

**First appearance:** 0023-benito-cereno

## Snapshot

The haggard Spanish captain of the San Dominick, whose strange authority over his own deck and shattered composure unsettle every visitor who boards.

## Who they are

Cereno commands a Spanish merchantman carrying slaves between colonial ports, yet his authority looks hollow: he leans on his servant Babo, trembles at shadows, and seems unable to give a straight account of his voyage. Delano reads him as a broken gentleman worn down by fever and loss, but Cereno's evasions and sudden faints suggest something he cannot say aloud. His ambiguous suffering drives the story's central mystery and makes every courtesy aboard ship feel like a negotiation.
