# The Swamja — Short Fiction character guide

> The Swamja in Short Fiction by Henry Kuttner.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Swamja, a Swamja, every Swamja, A Swamja

**First appearance:** 0000-the-secret-of-kralitz

## Snapshot

Fish-headed gods of Venus who engineered the North-Fever to funnel the strong into their hidden city and enslave them for life.

## Who they are

The Swamja are not villains who chase anyone; they are a centuries-old civilization that has made a science of harvesting slaves, seeding the fever into the winds and shaping the mountains into a trap. Lysla's account of them turns Vanning's sickness into something far worse than illness, and their thousand-strong city becomes the destination the entire early arc is quietly steering toward. Their collective, patient cruelty is the story's real gravity.
