## Who they are

Brown is the man the armed porters listen to, the one who walks unarmed into their mutinous huddle and talks them down. When the pollen takes him, he becomes a blank-eyed sleepwalker who rises at a word and follows any voice, a living body without a will. His helplessness is the story's turning point: Sampson wants to abandon the mission, Paula refuses, and Garth must explain that the captain can be led like a puppet—forcing everyone to decide what loyalty costs in the Black Forest.
