# Harley Warren — Short Fiction character guide

> Harley Warren in Short Fiction by H. P. Lovecraft.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Warren

**First appearance:** 0005-the-statement-of-randolph-carter

## Snapshot

A wealthy occultist who leads a reluctant friend into Big Cypress Swamp to prove a theory about corpses that never rot.

## Who they are

Warren dominates his narrator-friend through sheer intellectual force, drawing him into forbidden Arabic texts and studies pursued more from fascination than inclination. He carries an undecipherable book from India and speaks obsessively of tombs where the dead rest firm and fat for a thousand years. His confidence and his secrecy pull the pair toward an ancient cemetery at midnight, and it is his absence the next morning that turns a scholarly expedition into a lifelong haunting.
