## Who they are

Woodhouse moves through the social world of Hammerpond Park, where Lady Aveling's jewellery draws nightly police protection and every stranger is watched. He is drawn into a circle of men — Sant, Porson, Wainwright — whose curiosity about a suspicious artist named Watkins leads them toward something more dangerous than a bad painting. His role is to be present at the edges of a conspiracy he does not yet fully understand, and to help the reader feel the unease gathering around the park.
