First appearance: A Slip Under the Microscope
As a supporting figure in Short Fiction, Winter Wedderburn is not background color—the story leans on what they do once the chapter opens.
The protagonist, a shy orchid enthusiast who buys a strange orchid and is overcome by its scent.
Wedderburn drifts through auction rooms and his own small hothouse, a man so uneventful that his housekeeper dreads his talk of 'something happening.' He has never married, never fallen in love, never broken a bone, and he half-envies the dead orchid-hunter whose adventures he can only read about. When he finally makes a purchase that promises to change his luck, his quiet longing for a remarkable life becomes the hinge on which the tale turns.
