## Who they are

Pollock is a minor figure in a West African expedition, restless, quick to anger, and already hardened by months of brutality along the Kittam River. His casual desecration of a native idol and his violent encounter with the Porroh man set in motion a vendetta that his cautious companion Waterhouse warns him is only beginning. His mounting dread, and his refusal to take the threat seriously until too late, make him the engine of the story's escalating horror.
