# Minnie — Short Fiction character guide

> Minnie in Short Fiction by H. G. Wells.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** May

**First appearance:** 0004-the-jilting-of-jane

## Snapshot

A young wife who watches her husband's small shop and smaller hopes collapse, and answers his despair with a courage she does not quite feel.

## Who they are

Minnie shares a failing draper's business and a cramped life with Sid, whose debts and panic threaten to sell them up. When he breaks down beside her, sobbing that he was a knave to marry her, she soothes him with a soft 'Ssh!' even as her own eyes redden. Her patient, practical hope—service, an uncle's help, the favourite formula that 'something might happen'—matters because it keeps the story's fragile domestic world from tipping entirely into ruin.
