## Who they are

Fanny is one of two daughters escorting 'Ma' to Rome, all of them abroad for the first time, thrilled by Charing Cross and the Channel and the very word Rome. Where her companion Miss Winchelsea suppresses every feeling into low, clear pleasantness, Fanny cries 'Fancy!' and wonders aloud whether the Empress of the French still lives at Chislehurst. Her unguarded enthusiasm is the story's comic counterweight, and it quietly exposes the social anxieties that govern the little party's behaviour.
