# Azuma-zi — Short Fiction character guide

> Azuma-zi in Short Fiction by H. G. Wells.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Azuma

**First appearance:** 0010-the-lord-of-the-dynamos

## Snapshot

A brown-skinned stranger from the East who tends Holroyd's great dynamo and begins to hear a god in its ceaseless thunder.

## Who they are

Azuma-zi arrives in London out of the stokehole of the Lord Clive, drawn by tales of a city where even beggars are white, and ends up penniless, half-mute in English, and bullied in a Camberwell dynamo shed. His employer kicks him as a matter of habit and never guesses what a mind like his might make of a machine that hums and throbs like a living thing. Where Holroyd sees a defective engine, Azuma-zi perceives mightiness and pride — and that private awe is the hinge on which the story turns.
