Miles Gilbert is a space explorer whose survey work keeps him at the edges of the expedition, watching the planet from above while others dig below.

## Who they are

Gilbert flies the survey routes and returns with reports the camp listens to over dinner, a man whose job is to see the whole planet at once. He is a civilian among officers, useful and slightly apart, and his observations carry weight because no one else has looked at the terrain from his altitude. What he notices on those flights may matter more than anyone in the huts yet realizes.
