# Edward Chalmers — Short Fiction character guide

> Edward Chalmers in Short Fiction by H. Beam Piper.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Ed Chalmers, Ed, Doctor Edward Chalmers

**First appearance:** 0004-last-enemy

## Snapshot

A history professor who remembers the future instead of the past, he lives in quiet dread of the slips that keep exposing him.

## Who they are

Chalmers teaches modern history at a college where his colleagues notice nothing stranger than a few odd references, but he knows better. He has already mentioned Martian colonies, Canadian secession, and a book not yet written, and each slip tightens the noose of suspicion around him. When he realizes a foreign leader has only months to live, he faces the unbearable question of whether he can or should interfere, making his private burden the story's central moral pressure.
