## Who they are

Marroca is the wife of a busy French civil servant in an Algerian town, and she spends her husband's working hours in the narrator's house, sleeping, laughing, and loving with animal directness. Her body and her will are equally ungovernable: she strips naked under the African moon, cries out loud enough to make distant dogs howl, and asks her lover to sleep in her husband's bed as a keepsake. That request — innocent in her mouth, dangerous in his — is what turns a sunlit idyll into something with teeth.
