# Boule de Suif — Short Fiction character guide

> Boule de Suif in Short Fiction by Guy de Maupassant.

**Role:** major

**First appearance:** 0041-boule-de-suif

## Snapshot

A warm-hearted prostitute traveling with respectable citizens during the Franco-Prussian War, generous with food and dignity until her companions need a scapegoat.

## Who they are

Boule de Suif shares a coach out of Rouen with merchants, nobles, and nuns who treat her as beneath them yet gladly accept her provisions. Her patriotism and easy kindness stand in sharp contrast to their calculated respectability, and she becomes the group's moral test when a Prussian officer demands a price for their passage. What happens to her among these travelers exposes the hypocrisy of the very society that condemns her trade.
