> Hector Macintosh in Short Fiction by George MacDonald.

**Role:** major

**Also known as:** Rubies Hector Macintosh, Hector, Mr. Hector

**First appearance:** 0000-a-double-story

## Snapshot

A proud young Scot whose name carries weight he has not yet earned, caught between inherited expectation and the man he might become.

## Who they are

Hector moves among neighbors who measure him by his family and his prospects, and he feels the scrutiny keenly. His pride is both armor and liability: it drives him to prove himself, yet blinds him to the quieter claims of friendship and love. His choices in the early going determine whether the community around him becomes a support or a verdict.
