# Karl von Wolkenlicht — Short Fiction character guide

> Karl von Wolkenlicht in Short Fiction by George MacDonald.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Karl, Karl Wolkenlicht, Wolkenlicht, the dead Karl, poor Wolkenlicht, the real Karl

**First appearance:** 0000-a-double-story

## Snapshot

A dead man whose name and memory refuse to stay buried, he haunts the living less as a ghost than as a claim no one can fully settle.

## Who they are

Karl belongs to the past of the story's central household, a figure whose death left obligations, affections, and questions behind. Those who knew him measure themselves against him — or against the version of him they have constructed — and the living find it hard to love freely while his shadow occupies the room. His absence shapes the middle of the tale, forcing the survivors to decide what they owe the dead and what they owe themselves.
