# Elsie Scott — Short Fiction character guide

> Elsie Scott in Short Fiction by George MacDonald.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Elsie, poor Elsie

**First appearance:** 0000-a-double-story

## Snapshot

A young woman whose hardships strip away comfort and pretence, forcing her to discover what she truly believes when nothing is left.

## Who they are

Elsie Scott endures losses that would flatten a weaker spirit, and the story follows her through poverty, grief, and the indifference of those better placed. Her suffering is not decorative; it tests her faith and her kindness, and the reader watches to see whether hardship will harden her or refine her. She matters because her quiet resilience gives the tale its emotional weight and its most searching questions about providence and love.
