# Annie Melville — Short Fiction character guide

> Annie Melville in Short Fiction by George MacDonald.

**Role:** major

**Also known as:** Annie, poor Annie

**First appearance:** 0000-a-double-story

## Snapshot

A servant girl whose patient faith and hidden sorrow make her the quiet conscience of a household that seldom notices her.

## Who they are

Annie moves through the world as a hired hand, valued for her work and overlooked as a person, which sharpens both her humility and her loneliness. Her loyalty to those she serves collides with a private grief she carries without complaint, and the gap between what she feels and what she is permitted to say shapes every kindness she offers. Her endurance anchors the story's moral center long before anyone else recognizes it.
