Driven by a sudden adventurous spirit, he dresses and goes out into the night, wandering aimlessly in search of a mysterious cure.

Saranin encounters a mysterious Armenian who offers him a magical potion that can reduce his wife's weight, with a demonstration on the servant Gaspar.
Chapter 5
III
Saranin, beaming with joy, waits for an opportunity to administer an Armenian remedy to his wife Aglaya, who complains of a headache. He convinces her to drink it, but she cleverly switches their glasses, leaving Saranin to suffer the consequences. He rushes to find the Armenian for an antidote.
