# MacCauley — Short Fiction character guide

> MacCauley in Short Fiction by Frederik Pohl.

**Role:** supporting

**First appearance:** 0000-asteroid-of-the-damned

## Snapshot

A hard-luck gambler on Pallas, MacCauley loses his pocket, his money, and his footing to a pickpocketing Kiddie and a bar-wide brawl in one night.

## Who they are

MacCauley is a man whose luck runs bad and stays bad, drifting through the floating population of Pallas with a sport-silk jacket and not much else. When a metals-mad asterite Kiddie lifts his pocket — slit and all — Mac gives chase and collides with exactly the wrong drunk. The riot that follows strips him of everything, and his penniless scramble out of the gambling joint sets the desperate tone of his story.
