Kittrell sits beside Haendl on the warm, shaking floor of the binary planet, fitting cartridges into a clip and grinning at the chaos Tropile has set loose through the Pyramid network. He's one of the hauled-up men, weapons, and God-knows-what-all, and he explains the situation with a gleeful, almost boyish relish. He matters because he embodies the rebellion's rank and file, the ordinary muscle that turns Tropile's impossible scheme into something that might actually break the Pyramids.
