# Cynthia Jackson — Short Fiction character guide

> Cynthia Jackson in Short Fiction by Frank Belknap Long.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Cynthia, Ned Jackson, Ned

**First appearance:** 0000-the-hounds-of-tindalos

## Snapshot

A beautiful woman in a Martian camp whose love for the frail Ned Jackson made every other man envy him—and one of them, perhaps, murder him.

## Who they are

Cynthia, called Molly in the camp's talk, chose the small, self-sufficient Ned over every larger and louder man around her, a puzzle that gnaws at the narrator and Harry as they stand over Ned's bashed-in skull. The killer's size-twelve footprints in the sand point away from any small man, and the jealousy Ned inspired without lifting a finger could make the wrong sort of rival mad as a caged hyena. Her choice sits at the center of the mystery: a love that cost a man his life and left the camp's men measuring each other's shoes.
