# Bill Cullen — Short Fiction character guide

> Bill Cullen in Short Fiction by Frank Belknap Long.

**Role:** major

**Also known as:** Bill, III Bill

**First appearance:** 0000-the-hounds-of-tindalos

## Snapshot

Bill Cullen is the steady presence whose account of a drifter's drowning and whose talk of Martian telepathy gives the whispering desert its first unsettling shape.

## Who they are

Bill moves through the camp as a reliable witness, the man who tells Molly how the vicious rat fell into the canal and never came up. His report frames the drifter as a sun-crazed maniac, but the story's deeper unease comes from what he and others sense in the Martian air. He matters because his calm, factual voice makes the later horror of Larsen's return feel like something the camp should have seen coming.
