# Zurito — Short Fiction character guide

> Zurito in Short Fiction by Ernest Hemingway.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** The veteran Zurito

**First appearance:** 0056-the-undefeated

## Snapshot

A veteran picador whose steady presence in the bullring is the one thing Manuel Garcia bargains for before he'll agree to substitute in a nocturnal.

## Who they are

Zurito is the picador Manuel insists on having, the man whose skill with the horse and lance lets a bullfighter call his shots. He belongs to the older, harder world of the corrida, where a good pic means the difference between control and disaster. Manuel's demand for him—and Retana's refusal to pay—exposes exactly how little the aging matador has left to bargain with.
