# Ole Andreson — Short Fiction character guide

> Ole Andreson in Short Fiction by Ernest Hemingway.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Ole

**First appearance:** 0059-the-killers

## Snapshot

A former prizefighter who lies on his bed in a rooming-house, resigned to the men who have come to town to shoot him.

## Who they are

Ole Andreson has stopped going out for meals, and when Nick Adams climbs the stairs to warn him, he receives the news with a flatness that unsettles more than fear would. He is heavy, slow, and past fighting; whatever he did in his boxing days has followed him to this rented room. His refusal to run or even to leave the house turns the story's violence inward, making him the still center around which Nick's initiation turns.
