**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Mr. and Mrs. Elliot

**First appearance:** 0020-mr-and-mrs-elliot

## Snapshot

Hubert Elliot's wife, once a Boston tea-shop girl, who typed his poems, wanted a baby, and now sleeps beside her girl friend in the big medieval bed.

## Who they are

Cornelia Elliot married Hubert after a dance in the back room of a shop, and the marriage has settled into a long, humid disappointment neither of them can name. She learned the touch system to type his manuscripts, but the girl friend from Boston proved neater and more efficient, and now the two women cry together in the enormous bed while Hubert drinks alone in the garden. Her drift toward the girl friend is the story's real event, delivered without a single raised voice.
