# Hubert Elliot — Short Fiction character guide

> Hubert Elliot in Short Fiction by Ernest Hemingway.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Hubert, Elliot

**First appearance:** 0020-mr-and-mrs-elliot

## Snapshot

A young American poet in Paris who married his typist almost by accident and now writes long poems at night while drinking white wine alone.

## Who they are

Hubert Elliot came to Europe with a contract for a book of poems and a vague sense that marriage and art would somehow complete each other. Instead he and Cornelia wanted a baby with a desperation that curdled into separate bedrooms, a girl friend brought over from Boston, and a château in Touraine that turned out to be flat and hot. His retreat into night work and white wine is the story's quiet indictment of a certain kind of earnest, self-serious American abroad.
