## Who they are

Hogan runs the training camp and has watched Jack not sleep for a week, calling him stale as poorhouse cake and predicting Walcott will tear him in two. He's blunt, unsentimental, and right, and he knows the farm will take the blame when Jack loses. His running argument with the narrator about reporters and form is the story's conscience — the man who sees the truth and can't do a thing about it.
