## Who they are

Mr. Shuttleworthy is the borough's most prosperous merchant, a man whose bare word is good for a thousand and whose christening as Charles gave him that ingenuous face proverbially worth more than any letter of recommendation. He is intimate with his next-door neighbor Old Charley Goodfellow, sharing wine and back-slapping liberality, though Shuttleworthy never dines at Charley's house. His sudden disappearance and the bloody return of his horse set the whole town in motion, making him the still center around which the comic investigation revolves.
