# Doctor Ponnonner — Short Fiction character guide

> Doctor Ponnonner in Short Fiction by Edgar Allan Poe.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Ponnonner, little Doctor Ponnonner

**First appearance:** 0057-some-words-with-a-mummy

## Snapshot

A fussy, enthusiastic little physician whose passion for galvanic experiments and unwrapping parties turns a parlor demonstration into an audience with antiquity itself.

## Who they are

Doctor Ponnonner moves through the drawing rooms of the curious, the sort of man who proposes to unwrap a mummy the way others propose a card game. His eager, slightly pompous hospitality drives the evening's entertainment, and his confidence in his own science makes him the perfect host for an experiment no one can quite predict. What begins as a learned amusement becomes a test of whether modern men can bear being examined by their own past.
