**Role:** major

**Also known as:** Monsieur C. Auguste Dupin, Dupin, the Chevalier C. Auguste Dupin

**First appearance:** 0031-the-murders-in-the-rue-morgue

## Snapshot

A reclusive Parisian gentleman whose uncanny ratiocination turns baffling murders into solved puzzles—then leaves him indifferent to the fame they bring.

## Who they are

Dupin lives in moody seclusion in the Faubourg Saint Germain, sharing chambers with the narrator and giving the Future to the winds. His analytic triumphs in the Rue L'Espanaye affair make his name a household word among the Paris police, yet his indolent humor and frankness alike recoil from the attention. When the Marie Rogêt case draws him back into the Prefecture's orbit, his methods—and his reluctance—shape how the mystery will be read.
