# Mr. Andrews — Short Fiction character guide

> Mr. Andrews in Short Fiction by E. M. Forster.

**Role:** major

**First appearance:** 0031-mr-andrews

## Snapshot

A kind, upright, broad-church Englishman who dies and ascends toward judgment, only to find his certainties about salvation tested by the company he keeps.

## Who they are

Mr. Andrews lived a beneficent and honourable life, educated at Winchester and Oxford, married with four children, and on the verge of a knighthood when he died. Ascending toward the Judgment Seat, he falls into conversation with a Muslim warrior who plundered infidel villages and expects the Prophet's joys, and the two souls float upward hand in hand. His own virtues confront him not at all; instead he feels immense pity for the man he holds, and the story's early arc turns on whether his broad-church confidence can survive this unexpected companion.
