Chapter 1
Albergo Empedocle
The narrator receives a letter from Harold in Naples, who describes his travels with Mildred and Sir Edwin, their plans to go to Sicily, and his improved health since becoming engaged. The narrator declines the invitation to join them, later regretting this decision as he believes his presence might have prevented Harold's eventual confinement in an asylum.
Chapter 2
I
Harold, an invalid, rows vigorously against an ebbing tide with his friend Micky, ignoring medical advice. Despite Micky's initial encouragement and poetic banter, Harold overexerts himself, suffers a heart strain, and dies in the boat.
Chapter 3
II
Michael reflects on the death of his friend Harold and his subsequent life, including his marriage to Janet, his career at the British Museum, his literary success, and his eventual disillusionment with his children and grandchildren, culminating in his death from a stroke of irony.
Chapter 4
III
Micky experiences a vision of Hell as a vast, sandy plain where the damned lie distorted and praise their torment. A mysterious voice—the spirit of youth, beauty, and desire—descends, offering salvation to those who remember and desire. Micky, after a second death, finds himself standing and crosses an infernal river in a boat, emerging into a glorious, sunlit landscape.
Chapter 5
IV
Miss Beaumont dances joyfully in the meadow, then disappears into the copse during a storm, leading Mr. Worters to suspect she has eloped with Ford. After confronting Ford, who cryptically confirms she has escaped absolutely, the chapter ends with the fence completed and Miss Beaumont subdued indoors. She later revives during a walk to the copse, dancing again as the storm subsides.
