The Years Roll By
After Vincey's sudden death, Holly receives a letter from the lawyers confirming his guardianship of Leo Vincey, a five-year-old boy. Holly accepts the trust, arranges for Leo to live with him, and raises him with the help of a male attendant named Job. The chapter follows Leo's growth into a handsome and brilliant young man, detailing their close relationship and Leo's education in Greek and Arabic. As Leo approaches his twenty-fifth birthday, Holly reveals the mystery of his heritage and the iron chest left by his father.
Chapter 5
The Sherd of Amenartas
Leo Vincey and Horace Holly read a letter from Leo's deceased father, John Vincey, which reveals a family legend about an immortal white queen in Africa and a mysterious potsherd inscribed by their ancestress Amenartas. The sherd recounts how Amenartas and her husband Kallikrates fled Egypt, were taken to the caves of Kôr, and encountered the queen (Ayesha), who fell in love with Kallikrates, killed him when he refused her, and sent Amenartas away. The letter urges Leo to seek the secret of life and avenge his ancestor. Holly and Job are skeptical, but Leo is intrigued.
