## Who they are

Dussardier is the sturdy, honest shop-assistant who knocks down a policeman for beating a boy, then stands bewildered as the crowd turns on him and the law drags him off. Bastard-born, without family or polish, he clings to his pipe and his dignity, and his gratitude to Frederick and Hussonnet for a small kindness is overwhelming. He matters because his simple decency and his willingness to act expose the vanity of the students' talk, and because his fate will keep pulling the story back toward the streets where convictions cost something.
