# How does Scaramouche develop the theme of Fate and Free Will?

> Scaramouche by Rafael Sabatini

## Answer

Scaramouche by Rafael Sabatini develops Fate and Free Will across the chapters the companion marks for this theme.

André-Louis often reflects on his life as a series of roles assigned by fate or circumstance, yet his choices—to become an actor, a revolutionary, or a duelist—demonstrate a struggle between determinism and personal agency.

André-Louis reflects on his earlier misconceptions and the inevitability of revolutionary change, while characters are swept along by events beyond their control.

The Marquis feels a fatalistic connection to André-Louis, seeing him as a Nemesis; he oscillates between confidence and despair about the duel's outcome.

André-Louis's mission to Brittany and his recall to Paris illustrate the interplay of personal choice and larger historical forces.
