Concepts
Ideas that structure Scaramouche by Rafael Sabatini — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Social Class and Revolution
The book explores the oppressive feudal system in pre-revolutionary France, the exploitation of the Third Estate by the nobility and clergy, and the growing revolutionary fervor that seeks to dismantle privilege and establish equality.
Identity and Disguise
André-Louis adopts multiple identities—lawyer, mob-orator, actor (Scaramouche), and fencing master—reflecting his adaptability and the theme that one's role in society is often a performance, shaped by circumstance and survival.
Revenge and Justice
The narrative is driven by André-Louis's quest for vengeance against the Marquis de La Tour d'Azyr for the murder of his friend Philippe, blurring the lines between personal revenge and broader social justice.
Theatre and Performance
The theatrical world of the Commedia dell'Arte serves as both a literal setting and a metaphor for life, where characters play roles, manipulate audiences, and use wit and disguise to navigate danger and achieve their goals.
Love and Manipulation
Romantic relationships, particularly between André-Louis and Climène, and Aline and the Marquis, are intertwined with betrayal, ambition, and power struggles, revealing how love can be exploited or sacrificed for personal or political ends.
Cowardice and Courage
The book contrasts physical courage (dueling, facing death) with moral courage (speaking truth to power), and examines how characters like André-Louis grapple with fear, honor, and the choice between flight and confrontation.
Eloquence and Power
Oratory and rhetoric are depicted as potent weapons—capable of swaying mobs, challenging authority, and inciting revolution—as seen in Philippe's speeches and André-Louis's use of words to fight the aristocracy.
Fate and Free Will
André-Louis often reflects on his life as a series of roles assigned by fate or circumstance, yet his choices—to become an actor, a revolutionary, or a duelist—demonstrate a struggle between determinism and personal agency.
