## Who they are

Lieutenant Tiro is a soldier caught up in the assault on the palace, brave enough to run a bullet-swept gap but honest enough to see no glory in it. Watching Savrola walk calmly through the same fire, he measures himself against a kind of courage he does not share and cannot quite admire. His survival and his renewed service in the attack make him a witness to how the revolt transforms ordinary soldiers into participants in something larger than duty.
