Chapter 1
Dedication

Chapter 3
Savrola
The opening chapter introduces Savrola, a revolutionary leader in the fictional republic of Laurania, as he prepares to challenge the tyrannical President Molara. The narrative sets the stage for political unrest, exploring themes of power, ambition, and the volatile nature of the masses.
Chapter 4
An Event of Political Importance
The chapter opens in Laurania after a rain shower, with a large, angry crowd gathered in Constitution Square outside Parliament House. President Antonio Molara had promised to restore democratic elections by signing electoral writs, but the crowd learns that the register of citizenship has been mutilated, erasing over half the electors. The Civic Councillor Moret announces the betrayal, sparking fury. The President's carriage attempts to leave but is blocked by the mob. Soldiers open fire, killing about forty people, and the square is cleared.
Chapter 5
II: The Head of the State
President Molara returns to the palace after a violent encounter with a mob. He discusses the situation with Colonel Sorrento and orders the arrest of Moret, though he later decides to be magnanimous. Lucile, his wife, anxiously awaits him and reflects on her life, her fading influence, and her desire to help her husband amid the growing political unrest.
