Concepts
Ideas that structure Sanine by Mikhail Artsybashev — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Individualism vs. Society
The novel contrasts Sanine's radical individualism and rejection of social conventions with the suffocating expectations of family, honor, and morality that torment characters like Lida and Yourii.
Sexual Freedom and Hypocrisy
Artsybashev explores the tension between natural sexual desire and societal shame, as seen in Sina's guilt after her affair, Lida's pregnancy, and Sanine's advocacy for fulfilling desires without moral judgment.
Nihilism and the Meaning of Life
Characters debate the purpose of existence, with Sanine dismissing traditional values and religion, arguing that life's meaning lies in immediate sensation and desire, while others like Yourii struggle with despair and futility.
Critique of Christianity
Sanine directly attacks Christianity as a force that suppresses revolt and individuality, promoting passive suffering and hypocrisy, which he sees as harmful to human vitality and freedom.
Dueling and Masculine Honor
The code of dueling is satirized through Sanine's refusal to fight Sarudine, exposing the absurdity of honor-based violence and the cowardice behind social expectations of masculinity.
Nature and Vitality
Nature is portrayed as a source of freedom and joy, contrasting with the oppressive social world; Sanine's physical vitality and love of the outdoors symbolize a life-affirming force against decay and despair.
Despair of the Intelligentsia
The preface and characters like Yourii reflect the post-revolutionary disillusionment of Russian intellectuals, who see political change as futile and are paralyzed by existential angst and self-loathing.
Gender and Double Standards
Women like Lida and Sina suffer disproportionately from sexual transgression, facing shame and social ruin, while men like Sarudine face little consequence, highlighting the era's gendered hypocrisy.
