> Yourii Nicolaijevitch in Sanine by Mikhail Artsybashev.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Nicolaijevitch

**First appearance:** 0007-vi

## Snapshot

A gentle young idealist who watches the world with hungry eyes, Yourii drifts through Sanine's orbit, eager to belong yet always slightly outside the warmth.

## Who they are

Yourii is the impressionable young man who sits on a pumpkin by a peasant's fire, blushing as he offers away his entire hunt and fumbling for small talk while Sanine and Riasantzeff converse with easy frankness. His embarrassment in that circle — the sense of being educated yet uninitiated — is his defining tension: he longs for the simple, direct life the others seem to possess without effort. His observant, receptive nature makes him the reader's sensitive barometer for the novel's social and moral weather.
