# How does Salem Chapel develop the theme of The Nature of Community?

> Salem Chapel by Margaret Oliphant

## Answer

Salem Chapel by Margaret Oliphant develops The Nature of Community across the chapters the companion marks for this theme.

The Salem congregation functions as a tight-knit but judgmental community, with tea-meetings, gossip, and collective decision-making illustrating both the support and the constraints of communal religious life.

The contrast between the humble, open world of Lonsdale and the mysterious, aristocratic seclusion of Grange Lane highlights divisions in community life.

The tea-meeting highlights the contrast between the safe, bright gathering of Salem and the dark, unknown tragedies lurking in Carlingford.

The deacons' collective response to Vincent's sermon and their shifting loyalty highlight the community's conditional support.
