> The protagonist, Mr. Vincent, struggles with his role as a Nonconformist minister, torn between his intellectual ambitions, desire for social acceptance, and the practical demands of his congregation, questioning the nature of his calling and authority.

## Explanation

The protagonist, Mr. Vincent, struggles with his role as a Nonconformist minister, torn between his intellectual ambitions, desire for social acceptance, and the practical demands of his congregation, questioning the nature of his calling and authority.

Vincent's identity as a minister is tested by the public performance of a dull sermon and the challenge to his authority from the deacons.

Vincent grapples with his identity as a minister, questioning whether he is God's servant or the people's, and ultimately resigns rather than compromise his sense of calling.
