## Who they are

Narr'Havas is the young Numidian monarch whose betrothal to Salammbô was sealed in Hamilcar's tent and whose love has since been crowded by ambition. He arrives at besieged Carthage as a savior with six thousand men and forty elephants, but Hamilcar keeps him waiting on the marriage to hold his loyalty. His presence among the defenders unsettles the Barbarians and complicates Salammbô's feelings, since she half-sees in him a reflection of Matho's pursuing malice.
