> Abdullah abu Azìz in Saïd the Fisherman by Marmaduke Pickthall.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Abdullah, Azìz

**First appearance:** 0003-iii

## Snapshot

A self-styled sage of the muleteers and camel-drivers, whose solemn counsel about afreets and far countries sends Saïd wandering with a few coins and a dying hope.

## Who they are

Abdullah sits at his threshold with a narghileh, consulted as an oracle by the drivers who take his stolid face for wisdom. When Saïd comes ruined and desperate, Abdullah diagnoses a spiteful devil and advises flight to Masr or the sunset-land, then empties his household box for his friend. His comic gravity and genuine generosity mark one of the few unselfish acts in Saïd's orbit.
