Chapter 1

Johnny Gray, alone in the garden after Marney's wedding, realizes she knows the truth about her husband. He confronts Lila Sain, the maid, revealing she is a plant by Jeff Legge. Johnny forces Lila to divulge the couple's plans, threatening to expose Legge to Mr. Reeder. Peter Kane overhears the conversation, his expression unreadable.
