> Lady Capulet in Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Lady Capulet Verona, Lady Capulet Nurse, Lady Capulet Marry, Lady Capulet Alack

**First appearance:** 0005-act-i-scene-iii

## Snapshot

Juliet's mother, who speaks of marriage as a book to be read and a cover to be clasped, and cannot hear what her daughter is actually saying.

## Who they are

Lady Capulet approaches her daughter less as a confidante than as a recruiter for Paris, armed with the argument that she herself was a mother at Juliet's age. She frames love as a volume to be examined and a golden story to be locked under gold clasps, all while Juliet stands inches away, already married to someone else. Her inability to see past the match she wants makes her the quiet pressure that seals Juliet's isolation.
